Bear vs. dog

Taggish pawing sculpins

The other evening, the Crumpster and I were last ones on the dock finishing up cleaning our fish and boats. We watched a brown bear walk out onto the island behind us in King Salmon Creek and noticed how Taggish the dog was busy pawing in the creek for sculpins oblivious to our big friend. 'Some bear dog' we remarked. But suddenly he caught a wiff of stinky bear and ran down the beach barking wildly. As he stood stance at the point barking madly the bear swam across the creek towards him. Yelling from us proved futile as Taggish stood his ground and the bear climbed onto the bank. As the bear hit solid ground running Taggish yapped bravely while backing up slowly. One swift paw and Taggish was a goner, so we grabbed an air horn out of my boat and began blasting it. After a few good blasts, the bear turned slowly away, with another quick blast he began running. Taggish, however, was also scared and we watched as bear and dog ran away from us....together.

  3. Good dogs do bark at bears! Mark, being up here in Alaska resonates with my soul...there are times however after these two months of up at 530 and bed after 11 that my weary mind forgets and I have to remind myself of how awesome this journey is.

  4. Great post! We had a black bear living in camp with us for the last week. Today we managed to scare it, and i think it finally left for good. I hear you on the up at 6 and in bed by midnight. Love the job, but the side effects can sure age us fast!

  5. Amanda said it the best i have ever heard. “guiding kicks your ass - leaves you poor, and ages you rapidly, but other then that…there’s no better job.”

  8. upon our arrival 2 weeks ago Brook chased a bear away from our floatplane dock right in King salmon. He had been scratchin' at the back door of our old Suburban cause there was some aluminum cans stored back there. Been kinda windy lately eh! Almost got stranded on the Branch a couple days ago. Hope your summer is goin' well, take care and tight loops
