Ma eye is puffy!

This is what the fn happens when yew outfish yer dad on FATHERS DAY! And you win three dollars from yer daddy for playin' buck buck buck. Which is a buck for the most fish, biggest fish and first catch.

The next weekend after that, you go out to Goose Lake on yer pontoon boat (yeah he finally let me use it again, I am surprised I didn't have to pay any USER fees) and you fish the same exact gaddamm fly (duble renegade fer al yall that like DETAILS) while you are in yer pontoon boat, RAIGHT next to yer daddy and he outfishes you 12-GOOSE EGG. And may I mention all Brook trout! WTF! FML!

Yes you get zero, and yer daddy gets 12. And then at dinner when he's drinking beer, he says "HEY I THINK I NEED TO WARSH MY HANDS, THEY SMEALL FISHY!". And then you get your whinin' ass up to bed an' the next mornin' YOU WAKE UP WITH A SWOLLEN PUFFY EYE! Because the fishin gods put a curse on you when you outfished yer daddy on FATHERS DAY and they sent a bug to come bite your sweet little eye-lid so the next mornin' you looked like you been punched IN THE FACE.

Trew story.

The End.

Carpon Fishing III

It's becoming a tradition. And like anything steeped, there's gotta be some color. I think our ratio over the last few years is well, I can't even talk about it....carpon fishing is tough stuff.
But remember this picture from last year?
Carpon Fishing with Sarah

We were missing this key ingredient, Rogue Angel Sarah. FunkJohnson no less.
Second missing ingredient, Steelie Mike. That's like making fried rice without the rice. We tried anyway.

Definitely a missing ingredient here.

A couple fresh ingredients tho:

Rogue Angel Whit singin' it up in the rain. Jay's lost.

Someone's phone rang. Mom's calling and the hurricane is heading right for us. Somewhere a TV has blipped over to Kodachrome colored lines and is flashing emergency warning signals....like go hide in the bathroom. We're gonna Lieutenant Dan this storm and fish through it. There are carp everywhere, I've seen a dozen, Chou Dawg saw one, and Rogue Angel Dawn's seen thirty....at least that's how I remember it, And we've only been on the water ten minutes. No one's going anywhere as the wind picks up and waves splash over the bow. Our third boat of lunatics shows up exactly now and we're shifting into the trees. Where it's safe. Really. It's safe in aluminum boats during thunderstorms if you all congregate together in the trees and cast with your graphite rods.

A Chou Dog and k8r sandwich (squashed between two boats.

The weather will be better next year, I'm sure.

Trucha Con Jamón

Have you been thinking lately, "What can I do to spice up my life?", and then you went to this blog for inspiration?

I offer you a new recipe I found, with a Spanish flair. That involves...

HAM.

In my opinion, the best freaking cured ham in the whole world, jamón serrano.

In Madrid, Matt models two of my many loves in life: wine + cured, salted meats (jamón serrano here).

I am not going to delve into too much detail about this cured-to-perfection morsel that has been made with love by Spanish hands over hundreds of years, with meat from free range, acorn-fed pigs, that melts in your mouth and might turn any innocent vegan granola eating girl into a sinful, lusty, carnivore.

Let me first start by giving credit to one of my favorite cooks, José Andrés. Yes, the famous Spanish, Tony Soprano-ish (but more feminine) cook who hosts the show "Made in Spain".

Recipe Ingredients:

-1 good-sized trout
- Two pieces of jamón serrano (if you can't find jamón serrano near you or don't want to spend the money on it, you can use Italian proscuitto, but if you come across a Spaniard do not dare to get into a jamón serrano vs. proscuitto debate because it will get ugly.)
- Pinch of salt (and more to taste)
- Spoonful of extra virgin olive oil

Steps:

1. Take off the head and gut/clean the trout
2. Put the two pieces of jamón serrano or proscuitto inside and season the inside and outside with salt.
3. Heat the olive oil up in a frying pan on medium heat
4. When the oil starts to simmer, put the trout in the pan. Cook each side for three minutes.
5. Now share with friends! Serve by cutting the trout in four pieces, and add more salt to taste if you want.

¡Salud!

Rogue Angel at Spey Nation II

Rogue Angel Whitney Gould will be heading east on June 20 for Spey Nation II, in Altmar, New York. Held on the Salmon River, Spey Nation is a gathering of casters, anglers and manufacturers coming together to share information, knowledge and their love for fish. Whitney had a great time at the event last year, and she's looking forward to seeing some old friends, and meeting new ones among the east coast spey contingent.

Whitney will be teaching a class this year with Nate Koenigsknecht of CF Burkheimer Fly Rods, and there are still spots available for anyone interested in signing up. It will be a three hour course on spey casting basics, with the goal of introducing people brand new to the two-hander, or reinforcing good technique for people with limited spey experience. The single spey, double spey, snap-t and perry poke will be covered, as well as some information on how to choose and use the right gear for the situation. The class will cost 125 per person, and participants will be given a 20% discount on the purchase of any CF Burkheimer rod.

More information on Spey Nation II can be found here: www.speynation.com"

To Fish is to Hope

Hope

Casting for Recovery's motto, "to fish is to hope" is true in so many ways. Having heard about CFR through the Stonefly Maidens Fly Fishing Club for the last few years I decided to volunteer and see what it was all about.

I had seen all the pink CFR gear at all the sportsmen's shows, fly shops, etc. and at first glance, turned my nose up at the baby pink color they used. I thought to myself, "JUST BECAUSE WE ARE WOMEN DOESN'T MEAN WE WANT ALL OUR FISHING GEAR IN PINK!" and the feminist part of me was angered and annoyed in a way that they couldn't pick a green or blue, or some other color to represent women fly fishers.

The CFR retreat changed my whole perception of what the color pink represents. The 14 women, all from different parts of Oregon, all different ages, careers and backgrounds, all of them dealing with the physical and emotional scars of breast cancer, came to the retreat to heal and learn about fly fishing.

Out of respect for the women, I do not want to repeat all of the things they have been through, with their cancer, families, doctors, significant others, etc.. You can already imagine the fear one would feel and all the hardships one would have to face.

But there is a light. A wonderful, pink light. Together, those women had 67 years of survivorship. So as part of the staff, I felt that my duty was to celebrate them, and give them the gift of fly fishing I was given so long ago.

Do you remember the first time you caught a fish? Do you remember the first time you stepped into that river and forgot about everything? Do you remember the hope that fishing experience gave you?

The mile or so drive in the Big K Ranch in Elkton, Oregon was incredible.

For confidentiality purposes, I cannot post pictures of the retreat, but I wanted to share this poem that the participants wrote for us and shared at the graduation ceremony before we parted ways:

"A Special thanks to the 'guides' of CFR
For 'casting' your love...and meeting us where we are
You've 'hooked' us on fly fishing at the Big K Ranch
Fun people & good times were a perfect match
We have 67 years of 'Reel' survivorship in this group
We ate, laughed, cried & negotiated plenty of horse poop!
Robin proved to be an amazing 'leader' who 'tied' us together
For this weekend of connection we will remember forever
President Lisa was instrumental in getting us here
And with her smile & warm welcome we knew we had nothing to fear
Whitney's bright smile & passion 'flowed' through the room
As she showed us the cool gear that we hope to own soon
Kelley taught us history and that 'Pez' were more than candy too...
And her ease and gracewith the rod is what we all strive to do
Judith taught us about mayfly's in an amazing bug talk
And took (we're sure) flattering pictures wherever we would walk
Katherine, our expert who showed us so much patience as we learned to cast
Rolling, back cast, who would have thought we would learn so fast?
Sherrill reminded us there is hope for our transformed bod's
Her stretching helped us make the most of casting those 'rods'
Joyce was the master of simplifying our knots with a smile
It was the only surgeon we want to see for a while!
Barb's gentle presence was calming and warm
A wonderful addition to the River Honey swarm
Lani was the hostess with the mostess greeting us with cheer
She is one of our sisterhood and our friendship we consider dear
Although we didn't all end up catching the big one yet...
Our 'fish tales' will include the numerous hits on yellow yarn you can bet!
We sincerely want to thank the Stone Fly Maidens before this weekend ends...
You made this Weekend Rock! And we are thankful to call you our new friends!
XOXO CFR Retreat 2009"

Traveling.

That's what I am doing. Traveling. For over a week now I have been constantly in motion, somewhat weary... From sad to see Mexico fade away to excitement seeing great friends and angels, to anticipation of a new adventure, within hours I will be less in motion as I land in King Salmon and unpack my bags for the 5 month Alaskan adventure that awaits. From there I will report.

Trout Totes by Morgan!

The talented Rogue Angel Morgan of the Sand Hill Blog creates awesome fish totes when not on the river fishing for them! Click HERE to see all the different patterns and colors. These are sweet!

Hypothetically speaking,

if these two people happened to be competing in a tanning contest, who do you think would be the winner based on this photo?

If you were to leave an answer below, it would help the judges if there were say a real contest to determine who is more tan than the other.
